Following the staging of the Walker Cup, the Club has joined Royal Birkdale and The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers as being the only clubs honoured to have also staged the Curtis Cup and the Ryder Cup.
The course is open heathland; its principal features are the prolific deep bunkers and the great banks of gorse and broom which, in spring and early summer, are much more appealing to the eye than to the golfer. Also the sandy subsoil which gives to the turf a spring very similar to that found on a links.

Complementing the course is a Clubhouse offering an unmistakable air of character and quality. Comfortable lounges and an excellent dining room allow delightful views across the course towards the escarpment of the Yorkshire Wolds.
