In 1889 a number of gentlemen met in Scarborough to discuss the formation of
a golf club. They either lived locally or holidayed in this fashionable Spa.
One of those present was Sir Charles Legard Bart. whose family owned the Ganton
estate, situated some ten miles from Scarborough. He suggested that a suitable
site was available on land adjacent to Ganton village. This land had little agricultural
value but appeared to be ideal for the construction of a golf course. A further
advantage was the close proximity of Ganton railway station. At that time rail
transport played an important part in golf course development.
This is the story of the Club, founded in 1891 as Scarborough Golf Club which,
sixteen years after its inception, changed its name to The Ganton Golf Club Limited.
All those golfers who have been invited to become members of Ganton over the past
115 years, the visitors and all the accomplished golfers who have graced Ganton
in various Championships and enjoyed this historic course, must thank those founding
members for their foresight.
The book is produced to a very high standard in a limited edition of 1550 copies.
It is printed by Deanprint Ltd., Stockport, on Heidelberg Speed Master presses
using 130gsm silk art paper. Binding is in a dark green Baladek except for a
small number in which the binding is dark green skivered calf leather. Finishing
incorporates head and tail bands with a ribbon marker in club colours and the
title is gold foil blocked on the front and spine. The book comprising 152 pages
and 288 illustrations, many in colour, is enclosed in a 130gsm laminated dust
cover depicting the first tee at Ganton. The foreword is by Sir Michael Bonallack
OBE.
T his book relates the story of Ganton’s past and provides evidence of the vibrancy
of the Club of today. As the nature of golf changes and the role of the golf club
alters, how should Ganton and other old established Clubs adapt? The ethos that
is so dear to the members and appreciated by the many visitors who enjoy their
time at the Club must not be lost. Golfers have, beyond a love of the game itself,
a shared reverence for its history and a commitment to its preservation. Golf
will continue to be introduced to new ideas and developments but must ensure that
the game which gives such tremendous pleasure to so many players is protected for future generations.
Ganton will surely continue to play a full part in embracing the new whilst keeping
those traditions which give the Club its unique ambience.
