Gary Brown's International Debut

The PGA Cup

Ganton Professional, Gary Brown, was invited to be part of the eleven man Great Britain & Ireland Team that played against the USA in the 25th PGA Cup Match at the CordeValle Golf Club in California from the 20th to 23rd of September 2011.

The PGA Cup is the Club Professionals’ equivalent of the Ryder Cup. It is a three day event, taking place biennially and is hosted alternately in GB&I and America.

The matchplay format is identical to the Ryder Cup, with foursomes,  four-ball and a final day of singles.

The teams are selected on a points system that is compiled over two years, based on their players’ performance in their respective national championships with double points awarded in PGA Cup year. The top eleven players are invited to be part of the match teams.

John Wells, Professional at Cherry Burton Golf Club; a close friend and golfing partner of Gary for many years was also in the team.  Gary and John played well together winning their fourball match on the first day. On the second day they lost the morning fourball match but won the foursomes match in the afternoon.  Unfortunately they both lost their singles matches on the third day.

The final result was USA 17½ – GB&I 8½
